TAMPA -- Bruce Hoffman is a private investigator in the popular sense, down to the Humphrey Bogart movie poster on the wall of his small office and the "Magnum P.I."-style tropical shirts he wears occasionally.

However, that's as far as any similarities extend to those familiar gumshoes. The 60-year-old law enforcement veteran gave up stakeouts long ago, and he points out rather quickly that movies, television shows and mystery novels don't always offer a realistic view of detective work.
